How did it begin ? Morality police expanded street patrols to reprimand women seen wearing loose hijabs. Then many people died while demonstrating, both men and women, some people were either injured or missing.

The cause

On September 13th 2022, a 22- year-old Kurdish woman named Mahsa Amini was arrested by the Iranian morality police, and spent three days in a coma before she died . She was hit on the head with a stick and she was also pushed against a car.

The Police denied what happened and said she died because of a « heart failure » although Mahsa Amini’s family said she was perfectly fit and healthy.

What is the « morality police » ?

Also known as Gasht-e-Ershad , it means « guidance patrols ». Their mission is to control if people’s outfit is conform to the islamic dress code in public.

The Trend

Mahsa Amini’s death started a trend on social media —especially on Tiktok : men and women all around the world, filmed themselves cutting their hair or shaving their head to show solidarity to the Iranian protesters. Now, solidarity is more than needed because the situation is getting worse.

The Figures

According to the NGO Iran Human Rights, at least 448 people have been killed by the regime forces since September, including 51 children.
